Several hereditary conditions can raise the risk of getting cancer. Two of the most common are hereditary breast and ovarian cancer HBOC syndrome and Lynch syndrome. People with HBOC syndrome have a higher risk for breast, ovarian, advanced prostate, and pancreatic cancers and people with Lynch syndrome have a higher risk for colorectal, uterine, and ovarian cancers. Understanding family health history helps provide a more complete picture of individual risk factors for disease. Genetic counseling is important for understanding if an individual and their family are likely to benefit from genetic testing, and for understanding testing results. In the age of precision medicine, genetic counseling is also important for educating patients about tumor molecular profiling (also called biomarker testing). This EBCCP program area includes programs focused on assessment of hereditary cancer risk, tumor profiling, and patient and family education.
